Game Summary

Loyola JV 5 – Buffalo Grove/Hersey/Wheeling 2

Monday, 02 March 2009

3/1/09 – Loyola won the 2009 Chicago Metropolitan High School Hockey League Junior Varsity Founder’s Cup by rallying to a 5-2 victory over BGHW.  The teams traded opportunities until midway through the first period.  The Ramblers were shorthanded, having killed all but one second of a tripping penalty, when BGHW lit the board first at the 6:37 mark.  The Visitors rode that momentum to a second goal 32 seconds later as they poked in a loose rebound from a sea of skates in front of the net, and the Ramblers were staring at their largest deficit of the playoffs, trailing 2-0.  With 1:52 remaining in the first, Dylan Half fed Zach Cooke with a perfect centering pass and Cooke converted the two on one opportunity to bring Loyola within one.  Five minutes into the second period, Tylar Novy kept the puck alive in the offensive zone so a Michael Caldwell blast could find the back of the net from eight feet inside the center of the blue line to tie the score.  Three minutes later, the momentum would swing the other way for the rest of the period.  The Ramblers took a tripping penalty and a cross checking penalty 14 seconds apart to find themselves playing three on five for...

Loyola JV 5 – Naperville North 2

Thursday, 26 February 2009

Loyola JV will play for the Founders Cup Championship on Sunday, March 1, at 12:00 pm in Northbrook!  2/25/09 – Loyola advanced to the Founders Cup Finals with a 5-2 win over Naperville North.  Just over two minutes into the game, a Daniel Bolton slapshot from the point found the back of the net and the Ramblers had a lead they would not relinquish.  The assist went to Matt Gavula.  At the 5:40 mark of the second period, Joe Stapleton swatted the rebound from a Peter Kennedy shot into the net to add to the lead.  The Huskies lit their side of the board 27 seconds later to cut the lead to one.  In the final minute before intermission, Gavula converted on a power play from Jack Doyle and Tylar Novy.  Two minutes into the third period, the Huskies poked a loose rebound into the net and the Loyola lead was back to one.  The Ramblers took advantage of a power play with five minutes remaining when Michael Caldwell snuck in from the blue line between the circles, took a pass from Bo Murray and sniped it home.  Zach Cooke also earned an assist on that goal.  With 88 seconds remaining, Novy fought through a check along the boards inside the blue line and as he...

Loyola JV 4 – Cary Grove 3

Monday, 23 February 2009

2/21/09 – The JV Ramblers advanced to the semi finals of the Founders Cup playoffs with a 4-3 victory over Cary Grove.  After the Ramblers withstood early pressure unscathed, Matt Gavula, assisted by Bo Murray and Zach Cooke,  started the scoring with a wraparound nine minutes into the game.  Dylan Half added to the lead, finding an opening on the top shelf in the far side of the net to make the score 2-0, with assists going to Peter Kennedy and Jackson Boleky.  Bo Murray made it 3-0 Ramblers with an unassisted power play goal in the second period.  A Trojan wrist shot found the top of the net, blocker side, in the final minute of the second and the momentum began to swing Cary Grove’s way.  The Trojans converted on a power play early in the third, and the Rambler margin was down to one.  Cary Grove continued to pressure the Rambler defense until the six minute mark. With the Trojans committed to their offensive end, Murray skated behind the defense, took a feed from Cooke, and sent a backhander top shelf to extend the margin back to two.  When Cary Grove was whistled for a penalty with 5:18 remaining, the Ramblers seemed to be in a good position.  However, one minute...

Loyola JV 6 – Naperville North 3

Monday, 23 February 2009

2/20/09 – The JV Ramblers advanced to the Sweet 16 of the Blackhawk Cup playoffs with an exciting win that was much closer than the final score indicates.  Danny Keefe put the Ramblers on the board 99 seconds into the game.  Eight seconds later, the Huskies converted a faceoff win into a 2 on 1 rush and the tying goal.  Dylan Half closed out the first period scoring to give the Ramblers a 2-1 lead.  Tylar Novy extended the lead to 3-1 early in the second period, but the Huskies answered with 4:33 remaining to get back within one.  Matt Gavula won the ensuing faceoff and beat the Huskies goalie high glove side to reclaim the Ramblers’ two goal margin within six seconds and the game went to intermission with the Loyola holding a 4-2 lead.  The Ramblers opened the third period shorthanded, and the Huskies converted their power play in the first minute to cut the lead back to one.  Loyola controlled the puck for much of the third period, but could not extend their lead until late.  With nearly three minutes remaining, the Huskies pulled their goalie for an extra attacker and threatened to tie the game with a flurry of shots from point blank range.  Danny Kovacevic made...
